A Drone Company in Dubai, Not a Drone Hire Service
How to tell one drone operator from another in this market, and how we are set up.
There are a lot of drone companies in the UAE, and from a website they look interchangeable. The differences that matter are not visible in a showreel: whether the operator is permitted, whether they are insured, whether they will handle the approvals, and whether anyone involved has an opinion about the shot.
Sortie Aerial Photography Services is Dubai-based and permitted by both the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and the General Civil Aviation Authority. The crew are filmmakers who fly, which is a different starting point from pilots who bought a camera.

The permit question, answered properly
Commercial drone work in the UAE involves several distinct things that marketing copy tends to collapse into the word “licensed”:
- Operator registration with the relevant authority
- Pilot competency
- Aviation permission for the specific flight and airspace
- Security and location-specific clearances where required
- Filming permits, which are separate from aviation approval
- Permission from whoever owns the property below
We manage the aviation, airspace, security and filming approvals a given commercial operation requires, based on the location, the flight profile and the project. What that set contains is not the same for a desert resort and a downtown rooftop, which is why we assess it per shoot instead of quoting one answer that would be wrong half the time.
Questions we get asked
What should I check before hiring a drone company in Dubai?
Three things. That they are a permitted operator, not a hobbyist with a good camera. That they are insured. And that someone on the crew can direct a shot rather than only fly one.
The third is the one people forget, and it is the difference between usable footage and a folder of orbits.
Does a permit cover every flight?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. Operator registration is a prerequisite, not a blanket authorisation. Individual flights can still need location-specific permission depending on airspace, proximity to airports and heliports, and whose property is below. Anyone telling you they can fly anywhere because they hold a permit is describing a fine they have not received yet.
What happens if the weather stops the shoot?
It gets rescheduled, and how that is handled is agreed before the day rather than negotiated on it. Wind is the usual cause in this region, and it is a safety limit rather than a preference.
Do you work with agencies as well as direct clients?
Both. Agencies generally want the aerial unit dropped into an existing production with a shot list already agreed; direct clients usually want the shot list built with them. Neither is harder, but they are different conversations.
